Faith: Hey Colleen! Thank you for being willing to be the first person highlighted on our Crew website! Let’s start with you telling me about yourself, outside of the OCR world.
Colleen: I’m 28 years old and I live in Devon, PA. I’m a Critical Care Nurse in the Neuro-Cardiac ICU at Bryn Mawr Hospital and I have been a nurse for 3 years. I’m currently in grad school to become an Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. I grew up in Northeast Philly and initially went to college to become a veterinarian, but changed my focus to nursing.
Faith: I just got chills all over again. Thank you for telling us that story and for not hesitating to jump into action that day. We are so glad you got involved with OCR and The Crew so that you were there that day for him. When and how did you get involved in OCR?
Colleen: I initially became more active during the summer of 2014 when I started training for the Runner’s World 10k that October, followed by the Broad Street 10 Mile Run in May 2015. I actually lost 35 pounds and 8% body fat in the process of training. Then one of my college friends invited me to do the Palmerton Sprint with her and her husband in July 2015 and it was fate—it was a terribly challenging race, but amazing at the same time! After that race, I connected up with The Crew OCR through the Single Spartans of the Northeast Facebook page.
Faith: And we are so glad you found us! What do you do now to specifically train for Spartans/OCRs?
Colleen: I do weightlifting, kickboxing, and boxing, and I train with The Crew OCR every Sunday (when I am not working at the hospital!). I generally like being outside, whether hiking or trail running, and I feel like my training has greatly improved, both physically and mentally, since I became more active in 2014. I have also been a tribal belly dancer for over 5 years!
Faith: I’m so intrigued that you do belly dancing. Tell me more about it.
Colleen: I got into belly dancing during college. I attended a women's health expo where Tribal Bellies Studio was hosting sample classes. I immediately fell in love and have been dancing for over 5 years. The movements really complement the natural movements of a woman's body and it's an amazing full body workout. I have also made lifelong friends and created a tribal sisterhood. Sadly, the combination of working full time and living 30 miles away from my studio means I don't get to dance as often as I would like, but I have never lost the moves! I attend classes and workshops as life allows! Maybe I'll show you a few moves!
Faith: Making new friends is one of the great things about the OCR-community. What is your favorite obstacle? What about least favorite?
Colleen: I love anything that has to do with climbing, so obstacles like the big cargo net, inverted wall, etc would be my favorites. My least favorite would be the rig. I really need to work on my upper body strength to conquer that obstacle. I’m determined!
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
