- 10/27/2018 - For many members of The Crew OCR, the race season starts to taper off right around the end of October. However, for two Crew members, Shayne MacLean and Rachael Olson, there was one more race to be conquered. Shayne's race season is normally filled with competitive age group and elite waves whereas Rachael has become the Queen of the Open Wave (or the Ultimate Open Waver). The two-combined decided to change their race strategies at the Spartan Race Tri-State New Jersey Sprint and impact the day of everyone they met on course. The race fell on the weekend before Halloween so they chose to embrace their love for all things fun, weird, and spooky. The pair donned fuzzy devil horns, wrapped Halloween colored ribbons in their race-day braids, and carried Jack-O-Lantern buckets filled with candy. Right from the starting line they handed out candy to volunteers, staff, and other racers along the 4-mile course. The festive buckets were even carried through most of the obstacles; over walls, under barb-wire, and the candy never spilled.
The best moment of all was passing out the last few pieces of candy to the volunteers at the finish line while Rachael finally earned the last piece of her first Trifecta. Rachael has had the goal to earn a spot in the Trifecta Tribe for a few years now but has always had the mental restraint of toeing the line for a Spartan Beast; which she completed back in April. With a kick-ass start to her season, she then went on to complete the Spartan Super at Palmerton in July. Ending her season at the fun-filled Halloweekend Sprint was the perfect way to celebrate her accomplishments. While the day was muddy, cold, and gloomy these two racers put a smile on the faces of everyone they met along the way and were happy to “save the day” with a piece of candy.
